2019 Social Cinema Series

Social Cinema is presented in collaboration with the Wisconsin Union Directorate Film Committee. The series is free and open to all.

  • A landscape features industrial buildings situated near water. The waterway is still enough to capture a reflection of the buildings on the shoreline. Some of the industrial buildings emit white billowing steam clouds. Small yellow-green lights dot some of the buildings. Two roads can be seen leading down from the buildings to the water. The entire landscape is cast in tones of gray and brown.

    The Devil We Know

  • Two men sit on white and metal chairs angled slightly toward one another. They sit before a white brick wall that features two large windows and appears to have a pipe running along its lower half. The man on the left has dark hair, a thin mustache, and a beard. He wears a black windbreaker and dark gray pants. He sits slightly forward, with his forearms resting on his knees and his hands clasped together. He looks at the floor. The man on the right is bald, and has a thin dark mustache and a bear. In his left ear, he has a stud earring. He wears a gray, black, and white patterned wool jacket with black clasps. Under this jacket, he wears a black button-down shirt and dark gray tie, paired with black trousers. He rests his left forearm on his knee, while his right hand is planted on his knee. He appears to be leaning a bit to his left, which allows his right arm to extend fully so that he can place his right hand comfortably on this knee.

    Invisible Lines

  • A fire blazes in the background, giving off black smoke. Tree branches appear to burn. In the foreground, a person stands before the fire. The person wears a bright yellow jacket and gaiter that is pulled up to their nose. Atop their head rests a red hardhat with goggle perched on the brim. The person has a camera with a large lens hung around their neck, and they are carrying a small blue bag over their right shoulder. They appear to be gesturing with their hands; their elbows are bent and their hands and splayed fingers are near their face.

    The Human Element

  • An image of the US flag is positioned horizontally. Upon closer observation, a shadow of a circuit board of some kind can be seen, most clearly on the white stripes of the flag image.

    Digital Disconnect

  • A number of men walk in a group. Some are uniformed police officers, but others are dressed in suits and ties. They walk down a street with a skyline behind them. The men cast long shadows on the street.
