2015 Social Cinema Series

Social Cinema is presented in collaboration with the Wisconsin Union Directorate Film Committee. The series is free and open to all.

  • A two-lane road stretches out into the distance beneath a dark sky punctuated by foreboding clouds. Metal guideposts line the roadway.

    Afraid of the Dark

  • A black-and-white image cast with a bluish tint features a man with short hair looking downward. He wears metallic eyeglasses with rectangular frames and a black t-shirt. He has a slight smile upon his face, and it appears he has a very short mustache & goatee.

    Citizen Four

  • An uplifted hand grips a tomato tightly, its stem facing outwards toward the viewer. The background of the image features a farm-like landscape - green rows of crops with a blue sky dotted by white clouds.

    Food Chains

  • The viewer looks down onto a dam- or reservoir-like structure. Water falls from various openings within the structure, generating white spray as it hits a lower elevation. The structure is comprised of a dark gray wall; behind the wall, a body of dark green water is held. A platform rests in the middle of the water with other structures upon it. Trees grow beside the walled structure.

    Return of the River

  • Four women stand before a seres of silver and glass-paned double doors. Light shines down upon them casting their faces in shadow. The woman on the far left has long, straight brown hair. She wears a black leather jacket, a patterned shirt in orange tones whose hem can be seen below the jacket, and black pants. The woman second from the left wears her hair braided off her face. It has dark brown and honey tones. She wears an orange shirt with a blue jean jacket and blue jeans. Her thumbs are hooked on her pants' pockets. The woman second from the right wears her long brown hair pulled off her face and worn in a high ponytail. She holds her hands behind her back. She wears an olive green peacoat and gray jeans. The woman on the right wears her honey-colored hair in long braids. She wears eyeglasses, a royal blue t-shirt, black vest, and coral-colored pants. On her right wrist, one can see a white bracelet.

    Out in the Night

  • A man stands before a stainless steel counter and shelves. The shelves are cantilevered to hold and show silver baskets containing bagels and other baked goods. Napkins, a silver tray, and a microwave can also be seen on the counter. Above the shelving hangs a menu with images of food on a red background with white lettering. The man has his right arm in the air with his hand in a fist. His short black hair is worn brushed back from his face, and he is smiling. His gray t-shirt reads "New York City" in black letters.

    The Hand That Feeds

  • Two young men are standing at a wooden table in a large workshop space. The table is covered with bits of plywood, clamps, a ruler, and other tools. The boy on the right wears safety glasses and a navy blue polo shirt. His short curly black hair is worn close to his scalp. He is hold onto a structure of some kind that sits atop the table. Opposite him, another boy stands holding another part of the wood structure. He wears a black t-shirt, and his safety goggles are perched atop his short brown hair. In the distance, the viewer can see a green chalkboard against the far white wall of the space. Three people are arrayed around a table before it. Two wear dark-colored shirts and khakis, while another is seated at the table with their back to the viewer.
